Intro to Time Management & Honors
This week our class discussed the topic of time management and the criteria involved with being apart of the Honors Program. Time management is easy to discuss but not always easy to apply in life. In life, balancing all of the areas a student is involved in can be difficult. Dr. Engel, Dr. Desiderio, and Erin Martin came to our class to discuss the ways that we have to be involved in the honors program. Participating in community service during the semester will require some time management. Community service opportunities that were mentioned were “Step in Statesboro” and “Treasure Savannah.” While considering my options I did ask Dr. Desiderio about whether or not my hours from my sorority community service requirements could count for the Honors program also. Personally, I find balancing a social and academic life to be challenging at times. In class we discussed the concept of a triangle and how we should treat college like a triangle including all three points of the shape. When students prioritize two points and do not balance all off them their mental, and physical health can suffer. In my case, the triangle consists of an academic, social, and practice schedule.

Along with balancing a schedule students also need to prioritize. Among these priorities students have to remember to eat and sleep. Prioritizing is a personal thing and when applied to school. I personally prefer to work in order from most important to least important. Another way that I keep everything in order, is by using my planner. I absolutely love writing down everything in order to not lose track of all my assignments. For the purposes of this class I did download an app called Remember The Milk. I think apps are a great way to do things, but I still prefer the satisfaction of crossing off an item on a handwritten list. Another way to enhance time management skills is to eliminate distractions. We watched a video called “Effective Time Management” which gave a clear depiction of how distractions need to be eliminated. This can be done by turning off electronic devices or setting goals to get work done.

Another way we studied time management skills was through an in class group activity. In this activity, we had to complete a list of odd tasks with the group we chose. My group, The Fab Four, won this activity! We were the only group to accomplish every task on the list. The Fab Four was successful because we worked together and also applied the divide and conquer method. My group did not prioritize any task on the list above the others. Instead, we went down the list taking things one step at a time.

Another activity that we did in class to emphasize the importance of time management was the money activity. During this activity we had to budget how we would spend 86,400 dollars in a day. After completing our list, it was revealed to us that there are exactly 86, 400 seconds in a day and just like the metaphorical money, these seconds can not be re-spent. This activity really put things into perspective and actually helped me to not procrastinate this week. On campus there are many resources to help students be successful in their courses such as the academic success workshop series, counseling for academic success, time management tools, and student resources. The Academic success workshop series centers around topics such as time management, note taking, and what is important for college success to name a few. Counseling for academic success offers tips on note taking and how to power read. The time management page on Georgia Southern’s website provides the acronym GPA- Goals Plan Action. Finally, the University Honors Program lists resources to help students stay on top of things such as calendars, research and advising. All of these resources place an emphasis on a student’s capability to perform and apply time management skills.
