Week 8

This week in fye we were asked to finish reading Crucet’s novel, “Make your home among Strangers.” This novel follows the story of a young Cuban American, Lizet and her journey of navigating through college and her ties back at home. Many of the struggles that Lizet encounter in the novel have to do with her background and heritage. Her mother’s attachment to a young Cuban boy who was having issues of custody and residency causes her to feel resentment towards this situation. I looked online at the common reads tab and the issue and themes tab. The theme that I focused on the most was the subject of first-generation college students which was addressed in the book. I think it is fantastic that the university places a book like this in front of students who might feel uncomfortable or out of place at first in college. I personally think that first generation college students are very inspirational. The other thing we were asked to do this week was to attend the authors seminar. The seminar was very crowded and I had to sit in the overflow room and watch a live stream on a big screen. This event quickly became hostile and it was very interesting to see how everything played out. After this event the campus saw a lot of turmoil. Students were fighting on Twitter and in group messages. Crucet also took to Twitter and sent out messages against both Georgia state by accident and Georgia southern after she realized her mistake. Other incidents related to the event occurred that night such as students arriving at the place where Crucet was staying, and students at Eagle Village burned their copies of her book. I think that Crucet’s book was not a bad thing for students to read because it offered a different perspective of a students first year experience. However, I think that her speech caused a lot of turmoil between students. I believe that there was more diversity, inclusion, and acceptance on the campus before Crucet came and now she has left what feels like the beginning of a race war. This is very disheartening for every student regardless of their race or background. It makes me sad that the student’s reaction to her talk has been so negative and has made us turn against one another. I hope that in the future, we can address issues with love and acceptance.
