week 12

This week we talked about how to evaluate information and conduct academic research. The Introduction to Academic Research video explains how we conduct research often times daily throughout life. Even looking up where the nearest restaurant can be considered research. This type of research is not very deep and has zero repercussions if it is incorrect according to the video. However, academic research has a need for the mastery of knowledge. When conducting academic research you have to cross-reference many credible sources to ensure that you are presenting valid information. The video “Know the Basics” explains that you have to follow directions to be successful. Therefore, when you are given a rubric you should follow it. The video also explains the differences between scholarly and academic resources. These sources need to be current. You can check this by referencing the information cycle to know the time frame of publication for a credible source. The video “Go Beyond Google” suggests using library search engines and databases instead of google. The video, “Search more Efficiently” gives a few tips on how to conduct better research. These tips include searching key-words. This means to search for the main words of your research questions.  You can also search for synonyms for your key-words. Another way to make better choices regarding research is to use limiters and to use subject terms. One more tip the video offered is to ask professors and information service librarians for help should you become stuck. The next video, “Take time to evaluate” explained that by using craap test you can test the credibility of possible sources. The most important thing for academic sources is to ensure that the authority and purpose are good, and in academic sources there should be no personal opinions. Individuals should also ask themselves “does this research meet my needs for this project?” The final video, “Expand Your Research Experience” explains that by offering students the opportunity to conduct undergraduate research they can gain experience and connections through networking. In order to practice this type of research, we had to complete a research assignment on our own. I researched the topic of music videos and am currently writing a research paper on this topic for my honors composition class.

This week in fye we were asked to finish reading Crucet’s novel, “Make your home among Strangers.” This novel follows the story of a young Cuban American, Lizet and her journey of navigating through college and her ties back at home. Many of the struggles that Lizet encounter in the novel have to do with her background and heritage. Her mother’s attachment to a young Cuban boy who was having issues of custody and residency causes her to feel resentment towards this situation. I looked online at the common reads tab and the issue and themes tab. The theme that I focused on the most was the subject of first-generation college students which was addressed in the book. I think it is fantastic that the university places a book like this in front of students who might feel uncomfortable or out of place at first in college. Week 7

This week we were instructed to watch the film, “Instructions not Included.” No one warned me not to watch this late at night. As a result, I ended up crying until one thirty in the morning Sunday night….thank you Doctora. All jokes aside, I actually really enjoyed the film. The story follows the relationship of a dad and daughter who were brought together unexpectedly. The child, Maggie’s mother left her at her Father, Valentin’s door. Once Valentin realized that the mother had taken off in a taxi he begins to consider the pros and cons of the situation. In an effort to avoid the responsibilities of parenthood, Valentine attempts to return Maggie to her mother in the United States. Valentin falls in love with this magnetic little girl. Throughout the movie, several people question the quality of Valentin’s parenting style. It isn’t until the end of the film that we realized that Maggie is terminally ill. WEEK ONE: CAMPUS & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT As I embark on my collegiate journey it is good to know about the resources that are available to aid me in the struggles that are certain to come. Leaving home, and gaining an entirely new schedule has been exciting yet completely overwhelming. I can say that I did not get lost during the first week of school. However, with the task of handling my education I am certain that I will require some guidance. In college there are many ways that a student can become involved, and at Georgia Southern there are any many resources to promote campus and community engagement within the student body. There are resources to assist students struggling academically such as academic advising, the academic success center, and the writing center.
