Week 13

This week we watched a film called, Motorcycle Diaries. This movie follows the story of Che Guevara and Alberto Granado as they rough it traveling across the entire continent of South America on a beat up motorcycle called the “Mighty One”. I have included the link to a google maps of their journey below. The young men each studied medicine in college and used their knowledge to help themselves and others along their journey. When reflecting on these characters my favorite was Che. Unbeknownst to most of the class, Che Guevara is a questionable figure of violent revolution. The passion Che developed came from his travels where he saw the mistreatment of many ill and impoverished individuals. It is evident throughout the film that Che has a true compassion for these people. For example, Che gives his girlfriends money to traveling nomads and took a stand against a mining company mistreating the desperate homeless people who were in search of work. Young Guevara also felt a deep compassion for those on the other side of the river in the colony he served at. This passion turned to violent tendencies which led to him becoming the Communist revolution leader known as the  “butcher of La Cabana.” He wished for a “united America” and had a tendency to remove those who disagreed with his vision. With a history of blood-shed and connections with other Communists such as Fidel Castro, Che was assassinated by the United States CIA in Bolivia. We then as a class debated whether or not Che had good intentions and got lost along the way or if he was just a cold-blooded killer. The movie definitely made me sympathize with Che, however it is hard not to see him as a negative influence on history due to his Communist tendencies. In regards to diversity and inclusion, Che had a great appreciation for diversity in the film because he seemed to care tremendously about different groups of people. However, his idea that there should be one people under the revolution and the killing of those who disagree combats this idea of diversity and inclusion.
