Before taking FYE, I had many expectations from what I’d heard other students experiences were like. Then, I personally took the course. Over the next couple of paragraphs I will reveal in full detail how my personal experience has developed over this semester. But first, I would like to review the student learning outcomes for this course. The themes are as follows: Develop and apply information literacy skills in academic and non-academic contexts, Engage with your degree program, campus resources, and community, and Engage with your degree program, campus resources, and community. The first outcome, developing and applying information literacy skills in academic and non academic contexts, was practiced in our blog posts every week. In our blog posts we had to determine the nature of the topics we discussed while forming our own opinion and access and evaluate further information to help us understand the topics. Some of these topics included our degree programs. When reviewing our

This week we watched a film called, Motorcycle Diaries . This movie follows the story of Che Guevara and Alberto Granado as they rough it traveling across the entire continent of South America on a beat up motorcycle called the “Mighty One”. I have included the link to a google maps of their journey below. The young men each studied medicine in college and used their knowledge to help themselves and others along their journey. When reflecting on these characters my favorite was Che. Unbeknownst to most of the class, Che Guevara is a questionable figure of violent revolution. The passion Che developed came from his travels where he saw the mistreatment of many ill and impoverished individuals. It is evident throughout the film that Che has a true compassion for these people. For example, Che gives his girlfriends money to traveling nomads and took a stand against a mining company mistreating the desperate homeless people who were in search of work. Young Guevara also felt a deep compas

This week we talked about how to evaluate information and conduct academic research. The Introduction to Academic Research video explains how we conduct research often times daily throughout life. Even looking up where the nearest restaurant can be considered research. This type of research is not very deep and has zero repercussions if it is incorrect according to the video. However, academic research has a need for the mastery of knowledge. When conducting academic research you have to cross-reference many credible sources to ensure that you are presenting valid information. The video “Know the Basics” explains that you have to follow directions to be successful. Therefore, when you are given a rubric you should follow it. The video also explains the differences between scholarly and academic resources. These sources need to be current. You can check this by referencing the information cycle to know the time frame of publication for a credible source. The video “Go Beyond Google” su

I am a music major and am semi confident that I will continue this major throughout my college career. By the end of this semester I will have earned fourteen credit hours along with the sixteen credit hours I brought from high school. I do not believe that I am missing any credits from high school. I will be required to take three core credit hours in the honors program. I met with my honors and regular advisor this week and after the current and following semester I should have two out of three of my core honors courses completed. This year I am doing community service for my experiential learning project. I am doing the BA program for voice and this requires me to take a minor. If I am correct then I could graduate one or two semesters early. Completing my undergraduate education in the honors program helps me to achieve my long term goal of earning good grades in my classes and challenging myself to continue to work hard. I will especially have to work hard to complete the four fo

In Maurice Asheley’s Ted talk, “Working backwards to solve a problem” he spoke about retrograde analysis and how master chess players can see moves in a game before they even happen. He said something along the lines that “It pays to look forward and back.” This applies to both chess and planning ahead for your degree. I will have to plan ahead to accomplish my goals. Two examples of this are planning your core (areas A-F) and prerequisites. For example, I will have to take psychology 1101 in order to begin a psychology minor. An example of a personal goal although weird for me is to never hit a juul. I am in the arts focus area and am a music major in the BA program with a focus on voice. The words that I picked from the extensive list that I would consider my core values are compassion, independence, loyalty, honesty, and genuineness. I also read the article, “Creating and Living by your own values” by Chris Guillebeau. One main takeaway from the article for me is that only you can

This week in Fye we watched the film that followed the young Cuban American Elian Gonzalez.  In earlier weeks we discussed this little boy. We accessed this documentary through Kanopy. The film showed how Elian and his family were treated after he was found. The documentary follows the story of how the American Government, Fidel Castro, and the people of both countries responsed to Elian being found in United States water. While watching the film I thought it was really sad how Elian was forced to parade in front of the press at odd hours during both day and night. I think that this situation would not be healthy for any kid and put young Elian in a compromising situation. Ultimately, Elian’s father got custody of him and took him home to spend the rest of their lives in Cuba. As a result of this, Elian remained loyal to Castro who had grown fond of him. Many Americans then questioned whether or not the American government made the right decision. Allowing the child to go home eventu

This week in fye we were asked to finish reading Crucet’s novel, “Make your home among Strangers.” This novel follows the story of a young Cuban American, Lizet and her journey of navigating through college and her ties back at home. Many of the struggles that Lizet encounter in the novel have to do with her background and heritage. Her mother’s attachment to a young Cuban boy who was having issues of custody and residency causes her to feel resentment towards this situation. I looked online at the common reads tab and the issue and themes tab. The theme that I focused on the most was the subject of first-generation college students which was addressed in the book. I think it is fantastic that the university places a book like this in front of students who might feel uncomfortable or out of place at first in college. I personally think that first generation college students are very inspirational. The other thing we were asked to do this week was to attend the authors seminar. The sem
